A power reserve on a bumper automatic

This Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, produced between 1948 and the early 1950s, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 33.5mm steel case with faceted lugs. It combines two features that few watches of this period brought together: a bumper automatic winding system and a power reserve indicator.

The calibre 481 powering it is a bumper. Its oscillating weight does not rotate freely through a full three hundred and sixty degrees: it travels across a limited arc and then rebounds against two spiral springs placed at the end of its path, perfectly visible when the caseback is opened. The wearer then feels a slight tapping on the wrist with each movement of the arm, a sensation that no contemporary watch produces anymore.

The power reserve indicator is read through an aperture at 12 o’clock, on a graduated disc whose red sector signals the remaining energy. It is a rare complication on an automatic watch from this period: it addressed a very real concern among the first wearers of automatic watches, who did not yet know how to judge whether their watch was sufficiently wound.

The silvered dial features applied golden Arabic numerals at twelve, three, six and nine, and golden dagger markers at the other positions. A double minute track structures it: an inner railway track and an outer graduation. The golden feuille hands are accompanied by a central seconds hand with a red tip, the only note of colour alongside the power reserve sector.

Condition and warranty

• Overall condition: Good state of preservation for a piece more than seventy-five years old. The dial is original and has never been refinished: as such, it shows brown speckling distributed across the entire surface, denser around the periphery and in the upper half, as well as dark spots near five and seven o'clock, fully visible in our photographs. The applied numerals and indexes, as well as the hands, are intact. The movement is clean and complete, with its engravings perfectly legible. The steel case is in fine condition, with signs of use on the bezel and lugs. The Crystal plexiglass crystal shows scratches (7/10).

What is a bumper movement?
It is an automatic winding system in which the oscillating weight does not rotate freely through three hundred and sixty degrees: it travels through a limited arc and then rebounds against two spiral springs placed at the end of its course. The wearer then feels a slight tapping on the wrist with each movement of the arm. Jaeger-LeCoultre used this architecture until the mid-1950s before switching to the central rotor. No contemporary watch produces this sensation.

How is this watch dated?
By the serial number of its movement, cross-referenced with the tables compiled by collectors. Jaeger-LeCoultre does not publish any official correspondence and assigned its numbers by caliber blocks rather than in a strictly chronological manner: the dating therefore remains approximate and falls between 1948 and the early 1950s. Only an archive extract ordered from the manufacture would allow year-specific precision.

How is the power reserve read?
An aperture located at 12 o’clock reveals a graduated disc that turns as the watch is wound and as the mainspring barrel unwinds. A red sector indicates that the remaining energy is low and that it is time to wear the watch or wind it using the crown. This complication addressed a very real concern at the time, when wearers were discovering automatic winding and did not yet know how to judge the state of wind of their watch.

Has the dial been restored?
No. The brown speckling and dark marks it bears are the traces of more than seventy-five years of existence. A refinished dial would present a uniform surface but would lose the fineness of the original printing, the double minute track, and the rendering of the signature as they were executed at the time. A significant share of collectors favors integrity over a like-new appearance, and the price of this piece reflects that.

Should this watch be wound by hand?
When worn regularly, it winds itself through the movement of the wrist. If it has been stopped, a few turns of the crown are enough to set it going again, and the power reserve disc will indicate when it is sufficiently wound. On a bumper, avoid shaking the watch to wind it: the oscillating weight would strike its buffers with excessive force.
