Atelier Note

A radiant sun as its emblem, a coppery salmon center ringed with cream, twelve numerals whose luminous material has turned green over the decades, and two words on the dial, anchor and waterproof, that speak of post-war France.

Isly vintage française Watch from the 1950s, two-tone salmon dial with sub-seconds

This Isly vintage watch comes from France, and its dial says so in its own way: Ancre 15 rubis, the wording found on post-war French watches for a lever escapement fitted with fifteen jewels, and Waterproof, the English term then in use for a case designed against water. Isly Watch is one of those small French assembly brands whose name has left behind only its watches, recognizable by its emblem, a radiant sun placed above the signature. This one is a mechanical watch with hand-wound movement from the 1950s, in steel, with sub-seconds.

Its two-tone dial defines its character: a coppery salmon center ringed with a cream minute track, in the manner of two-tone dials from the 1940s and 1950s. Twelve luminous Arabic numerals, whose material has turned green with time, two hands with luminous channels patinated in the same tone, and at six o'clock a sub-seconds register guilloché with concentric circles. The sun, the Isly Watch signature, Ancre 15 rubis and Waterproof in three lines beneath 12.

The steel 34.3mm case, 42.8mm from Lug-to-lug and 11.3mm thick, features a polished bezel and long straight lugs, with a steel caseback and a domed acrylic Crystal; the fluted crown was replaced during the watch's lifetime. The hand-wound mechanical movement, with lever escapement on 15 jewels, has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a smooth black leather strap and its Buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

01

Two-tone salmon dial — the coppery center ringed with cream, numerals and luminous hands turned green with time.

02

Ancre 15 rubis, waterproof — the two inscriptions found on post-war French watches, beneath a radiant sun.

03

34.3mm steel with long lugs — guilloché sub-seconds, hand-wound, for him as for her.

Why choose a vintage française watch?

This vintage Isly watch holds a distinct place among vintage watches for men and women: its 34.3mm size can be worn equally well by either, and it offers what post-war française watchmaking produced in its most recognizable form, a two-tone dial and luminescent numerals, beneath a discreet signature. A vintage mechanical watch française, at the entry-level budget of authentic vintage.

Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Isly Watch?
A small post-war assembly brand, unknown to the reference books: France then had many of them, around Besançon and in the Jura, fitting lever movements under their own name. Its emblem is a radiant sun. It is chosen for its dial, not for its signature.

What do “Ancre 15 rubis” and “Waterproof” mean?
Ancre 15 rubis designates a lever escapement, the mechanism of quality mechanical watches, fitted with fifteen jewels: the usual marking on French watches of the 1940s and 1950s. Waterproof indicated a case designed to resist water; seventy years later, no gasket can still ensure this, and water resistance is not guaranteed.

Are the numerals luminous?
They once were. The luminous material on the numerals and hands has turned green over time and no longer glows at night; it is its present-day colour, a pale green against the salmon background, that gives this dial its character.

Has the movement been checked?
Yes. Our partner watchmakers have checked the 15-jewel lever movement, the dial, the hands and the case; it is guaranteed for one year. A hand-wound watch is wound daily, and a vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 34.3mm, 42.8mm lug to lug and a thickness of 11.3mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its long lugs give it on the wrist the presence of a larger watch. The lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
