Atelier Note
A dial that seventy years have speckled like stone, numerals whose luminous material has turned grey, two blued hands, and Doxa, "glory" in Greek, the name a twenty-one-year-old apprentice gave to his manufacture in Le Locle in 1889.
A vintage 1950s Doxa watch, 32mm steel with a patinated dial and luminous numerals
This vintage Doxa watch bears a name that means "glory" in Greek, chosen in 1889 by Georges Ducommun, aged twenty-one, an apprentice watchmaker since the age of twelve, for the manufacture he opened in Le Locle. The house became known for its pocket watches, awarded in Liège in 1905 and given a gold medal in Milan in 1906 for an antimagnetic watch, then for a patented eight-day movement in 1907 that equipped Bugatti dashboards. Long before the 1967 SUB 300, the orange-dial diver of the Cousteau team, Doxa was producing everyday watches like this one: a mechanical watch in steel from the 1950s, with luminous numerals, in the vein of post-war service watches.
Its dial bears seventy years of patina: a speckled silvered base like stone, darker in places, shaped by time alone and reproduced by no other example. Twelve luminous Arabic numerals, whose material has turned grey, and two blued hands with patinated luminous channels in two tones, one amber, the other pale. No minute track: the numerals alone occupy the dial.
The 32mm steel case, 38.4mm Lug-to-lug and 8.6mm thick, features a slim bezel and straight lugs, with a steel caseback and an acrylic Crystal; the fluted crown was replaced during the life of the watch. The hand-wound mechanical movement was serviced in 2025 by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a smooth dark brown leather strap with light stitching and its Buckle, both later additions.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Doxa?
A manufacture founded in 1889 in Le Locle by Georges Ducommun, aged twenty-one, under a name meaning “glory” in Greek. Awarded in Liège in 1905 and given a gold medal in Milan in 1906 for an antimagnetic watch, it patented in 1907 an eight-day movement used in Bugatti dashboards, then launched in 1967 the SUB 300, the orange-dial diving watch worn by Jacques Cousteau’s team. The brand still exists, in Switzerland.
Where is the Doxa signature on this watch?
[to be completed: signed on the movement / on the caseback / on the dial, signature softened by patina]
Do the numerals still glow?
No. The luminescent material of the numerals has turned grey and that of the hands amber and pale, and it no longer glows at night. It is the color of time, which, together with the speckling on the dial, gives this piece its character.
Has the movement been serviced?
Yes, in 2025, by our partner watchmakers: complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling and adjustment. It is guaranteed for one year. A hand-wound watch must be wound every day, and a vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 32mm diameter, 38.4mm Lug-to-lug and 8.6mm thickness, it suits wrists from about 14 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its format is that of 1950s service watches, slim and discreet under a cuff. The Lug width measures 17mm.
