Atelier Note

A silvery surface woven like a canvas, twelve fine black strokes as thin as hairs, an engraved bezel crosshatched to catch the light when the wrist turns, and a key, the emblem of Corum, on an automatic steel watch that is not even ten millimetres thick.

A vintage automatic Corum watch from the 1980s, steel with a silver linen dial and engraved bezel

This vintage Corum watch bears the key of La Chaux-de-Fonds: the emblem chosen in 1955 by René Bannwart and his uncle Gaston Ries for a house that, from its earliest years, sought forms no one else had made, the Coin Watch of 1964 in a twenty-dollar coin, the Rolls-Royce of 1976 with grille, the Golden Bridge of 1980 with its visible linear movement. Between these striking creations, Corum maintained a catalogue of de ville watches like this one: a 34.5mm steel case with an engraved bezel, a silver linen-textured dial, fine hour markers, a central seconds hand, and an automatic movement, calibre 1839, within a thickness of 9.5mm. An automatic watch from the 1980s, in the house's discreet register.

Its original silver dial is woven: a linen texture, those fine intersecting lines that make the light ripple like fabric. Twelve very fine black baton hour markers, two original dauphine hands in steel and a slender central seconds hand; the key and Corum beneath 12, a dot beneath the name, Swiss Made at the bottom.

The 34.5mm steel case, 38.4mm Lug-to-lug and 9.5mm thick, carries an engraved bezel with intersecting hatch marks, polished straight lugs, an original fluted crown and an acrylic Crystal. The automatic calibre 1839 has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a black crocodile-pattern leather strap with a steel Buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

Silver linen dial — woven silver tone, twelve fine hour markers, dauphine hands, central seconds hand.

02

Engraved bezel — intersecting hatch marks that catch the light, on a 34.5mm steel case.

03

9.5mm automatic — calibre 1839, with the Corum key as its emblem, for him as for her.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Corum?
A house from La Chaux-de-Fonds founded in 1955 by René Bannwart and his uncle Gaston Ries, recognizable by its key. Known for its unconventional watches, Admiral's Cup, Coin Watch, Rolls-Royce, Golden Bridge, it also produced classic de ville watches like this one. It still exists in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

What is an engraved bezel?
A bezel whose surface, instead of being polished or brushed, is worked with fine crosshatched lines in the Florentine manner of jewelers: it catches the light in small facets and shows fewer marks than a polished finish. Here, it echoes the linen texture of the dial.

What is a linen-textured dial?
A dial whose surface is engraved with fine crosshatched lines like the weave of linen: the light catches on it irregularly and the silvered finish appears woven. A finish found on dress watches from the 1960s to the 1980s, at Corum as with other great houses.

Has the movement been checked?
Yes. Our partner watchmakers have checked the calibre 1839, the dial, the hands and the case; it is guaranteed for one year. An automatic watch winds on the wrist; after a few days of stopping, a few turns of the crown will set it going again. A vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34.5mm diameter, 38.4mm of Lug-to-lug and 9.5mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its de ville watch format slips easily under a shirt cuff. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
