The filigree monogram on a two-tone case
This Christian Dior watch, reference 511501, produced in the 1990s, is a feminine piece with a 31.5mm two-tone round case: the bezel is edged with a steel trim, while the lugs and surrounding frame are golden. Its 6.5mm thickness keeps it firmly in the dressy category.
It is the lugs that create the design. Numbering four, they are horizontally fluted with gadroons and extend well beyond the case band, more like a piece of jewelry than a watch. They frame the case without blending into it, and it is this detail that makes the piece immediately recognizable.
The lacquered white dial bears twelve black Roman numerals arranged around its outer edge, separated from the center by a fine golden circle. In the middle, the CD monogram appears in golden filigree, discreet and generously sized, beneath the signature Christian Dior and the mention PARIS. What are gadrooned lugs?
Gadrooning is a rounded fluting borrowed from the vocabulary of silversmithing. On this watch, the four strap lugs are covered with it horizontally and extend well beyond the case middle, rather than blending into it. Why is there no seconds hand?
