The Tank in its most direct form

This Cartier Tank Solo large model Watch, reference 2715, features a steel case measuring 27mm wide by 34.5mm high, with a thickness of 5.6mm Crystal included. It is the most pared-back variation of the Tank: flat case sides, vertical brancards without a step, a bezel reduced to a fine outline. Cartier conceived the Solo line as the most direct entry into the 1917 design imagined by Louis Cartier, without altering its proportions.

The opaline silvered dial bears the maison's characteristic black Roman numerals, framed by a printed railway minute track. The blued steel sword hands stand out sharply against it. The Cartier signature occupies the upper part, while the words SWISS MADE appear at the bottom of the dial. No seconds hand, no date window, no complication: the display is limited to hours and minutes.

The steel crown is set with the blue cabochon that immediately marks the maison. Inside, the Cartier 690 quartz calibre allows for this 5.6mm thickness, which no mechanical movement could achieve in this case. The strap is the original one, in black alligator, fitted with its steel Cartier deployant Buckle.

This reference 2715 stands clearly apart from the Tank Must that succeeded it in boutiques. The strap here is in genuine alligator, whereas current models are delivered in calfskin. It closes with a steel Cartier deployant Buckle, where current production makes do with a simple pin buckle — the difference is immediately محسوس in wear as well as in the longevity of the leather. The case, finally, adopts a rigorously flat top surface, whereas recent versions have adopted a curved profile. It is a deliberate choice: the flat profile offers a more graphic reading and one closer to the original design, while the curved profile fits the wrist better. Both have their advocates, but only the earlier reference still offers this particular flatness.

This piece has had only two owners. The first received it new as a diplomatic gift; in 2020 it joined the founder of Atelier Victor's personal collection, who is now offering it for sale. It was opened and checked by our watchmakers before being listed online, like every piece we offer.

Three points to note

  • Alligator strap and deployant Buckle — two original elements that current Tank Must no longer offer, being delivered in calfskin with a simple pin buckle.
  • Case with a flat top — the rigorous profile of the first Solo models, abandoned in favor of a curved profile on recent versions.
  • Only two owners — received new as a diplomatic gift by the first, kept in a private collection since 2020.

Why buy a pre-owned Cartier?

Acquiring a pre-owned Cartier Watch rather than buying in a boutique allows access to the most recognizable design in twentieth-century watchmaking at a budget significantly below retail price, in a piece that has already been broken in. The Tank Solo is moreover one of the pre-owned luxury watches whose value remains the most stable, because it constitutes the entry point into the Tank collection.

This model occupies a precise place among men's and women's watches: its 27mm width and extreme slimness make it a dress watch wearable interchangeably by both, as appropriate with a shirt as with a sweater. The Tank is one of the rare watch designs whose appearance does not change depending on the wrist that wears it.

Like all our Cartier watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our watchmakers: verification of the caliber and its consistency with the reference, verification of the serial number, examination of the dial, hands, and case. It is this examination that underpins our lifetime guarantee of authenticity, and not the documents accompanying the piece. Each luxury watch we offer is also covered by a one-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How was this watch authenticated?
Our watchmakers open the case of each piece before it is listed online. They verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, check the serial number, and examine the dial, hands, and all components. It is this examination that underpins our lifetime authenticity guarantee. The accompanying documents, when they exist, are reassuring but do not replace expertise: they are more easily falsified than a movement.

What is the difference compared with a new Tank Must in boutique?
Three elements distinguish this reference from current production. The strap is in genuine alligator, whereas recent Tank Must models are delivered in calfskin. It closes with a steel Buckle folding clasp Cartier, whereas the boutique offers a pin buckle: the difference is noticeable on the wrist and the leather wears less quickly. Finally, the case has a perfectly flat top, while current versions have adopted a slight curve. This last point is more a matter of taste than quality — the flat profile gives a more graphic look, while the curved one follows the wrist better.

What is the provenance of this watch?
It has had only two owners. The first received it new as part of a diplomatic gift. In 2020, it joined the personal collection of the founder of Atelier Victor, who wears it little and is now offering it for sale.

Is this watch water-resistant?
It is rated to thirty metres when leaving the factory, which covers water splashes and hand washing. We do not perform pressure tests on pre-owned watches and therefore do not guarantee this value: gaskets age, and their condition depends on previous use. We do not recommend swimming or showering with it.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 27mm wide, 34.5mm high and 5.6mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm. It is the large model of the Tank Solo, which can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. The Lug width measures 17.5mm, a format specific to Cartier that should be kept in mind in the event of a strap change.
