A mechanical Tank Must, with a brown spider dial
This Cartier watch belongs to the Must of Cartier, the collection launched in the late 1970s to open the house to a new clientele: watches in vermeil — gold-plated sterling silver — reprising the historic designs of Cartier. This one reprises the most historic of all: the Tank, the rectangle with vertical brancards designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, produced here in the 1980s.
Its brown dial combines two rarities. First, the hue: a deep Havana brown, almost chocolate, one of the least common lacquers among Tank Must — far rarer than ivory and burgundy. And then its spider patina: the lacquer has crackled into a spiderweb over the decades, a network of fine lines unique to this example, which no other dial reproduces. It is a patina born of time, on an authentic dial that has never been restored — the kind sought after by collectors of Must. Floating upon it are only the must de Cartier signature, the double C and two golden sword hands.
The movement is mechanical hand-wound — the most sought-after configuration of the Tank Must, mostly produced in quartz: a few turns of the crown each morning, and the watch lives to the rhythm of its mainspring, like the original Tank. It has been serviced by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year.
The crown bears its blue cabochon, the only relief in the profile. The watch is fitted on a later period brown reptile leather strap, with Buckle pin buckle.

What is a spider dial?
It is the name collectors give to lacquered dials whose varnish has cracked into a network of fine lines, like a spider’s web. On the Must by Cartier from the 1980s, the lacquers evolve this way over the decades: each dial cracks along its own path, so that no two examples are identical. Far from being dismissed, these dials are actively sought after — it is a patina born of time, on an authentic dial that has never been restored.
Why choose a mechanical Tank rather than quartz?
The Tank Must were produced predominantly in quartz; the hand-wound mechanical versions, closer in spirit to the original Tank, are the most sought-after. The gesture matters: a few turns of the crown each morning, around twenty without forcing it, and the watch lives from its mainspring — a relationship with the object that quartz does not offer. This one has been serviced and is guaranteed for one year.
What is vermeil?
It is sterling silver covered with gold — a 925 silver case gold-plated, hallmarked on the back. Vermeil offers the weight and nobility of a solid precious metal, with the colour of gold. It is the foundational material of the Must of Cartier: it allowed the house to offer true precious metal watches at a price that opened Cartier to an entire generation.
What is the Cartier Tank?
It is the design Louis Cartier created in 1917, inspired by tanks seen from above: a rectangle with vertical brancards, which became one of the most recognisable watches ever produced. The Must vermeil version, launched at the end of the 1970s, brought this design to the wrist of an entire generation — and the examples with coloured lacquered dials are today the most sought-after.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 23mm wide, 30mm Lug-to-lug and 6.7mm thick, it suits wrists from approximately 14.5 to 18cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The Tank is read vertically on the wrist, not horizontally: it dresses a man's wrist as a historic watch and a woman's wrist as a classic. The Lug width measures 17mm.
