Atelier Note

From the case screws to the final link — and beneath this white dial, an automatic movement housed in 24mm, at a time when quartz reigned over this format.

An automatic octagonal Santos, screwed from case to bracelet

This Cartier Santos watch, reference 0906, belongs to the Santos family in its rarest form: an octagonal steel case, whose eight-sided bezel is secured by eight visible screws. Here, the screws do not stop at the case: the screwed-link bracelet, integrated into the line of the caseband, extends them all the way to the clasp — it is the founding motif of the Santos, echoed throughout the watch.

The white dial bears black Roman numerals and a railway minute track, crossed by blued steel sword hands — the full Cartier vocabulary. In all likelihood, this is a Cartier service dial, fitted by the house during servicing: an authentic dial, in the crisp condition that makes this watch so legible. The octagonal crown is set with its blue cabochon.

Beneath the screwed caseback beats a self-winding mechanical movement — a type of movement that Cartier reserved for a minority of its 24mm watches, in years when quartz dominated this format. Worn daily, the watch winds itself, with no battery to replace.

The original bracelet closes with a Buckle folding clasp signed Cartier and measures approximately 15.5cm, adjustable via its screwed links. The octagonal Santos left the catalogue in the early 2000s without ever being reissued: today, it is the variant sought after by those who know the Santos carrée and want a design seen less often.

Three points to note

01

Automatic movement — rare in this format at the time, serviced and guaranteed for one year.

02

Screwed from case to clasp — eight screws on the octagonal bezel, two per link on the original bracelet.

03

A variant never reissued — the octagonal Santos left the Cartier catalogue in the early 2000s.

Why choose a vintage Cartier Santos?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a precise place among our vintage women's watches: a 24mm case, 31mm Lug-to-lug, 8.8mm thick — a format that can be worn daily like a piece of jewelry, made seamless on the wrist by its integrated bracelet. Its automatic movement sets it apart from the vast majority of women's Cartier watches from this period.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: verification of the caliber and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every Cartier vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Cartier service dial?
It is a dial supplied and fitted by Cartier during servicing at atelier, when the period dial is replaced. It is an authentic component from the house, identical to the model's design, which also indicates that the watch passed through the Cartier service department — which works only on authentic pieces. On this watch, the dial is clean, with no marks or discoloration.

An automatic movement in a 24mm watch?
Yes, and that is what sets this reference apart: in those years, almost all Cartier of this size were quartz. Its compact mechanical movement winds with the motion of the wrist; when worn regularly, it requires neither a battery nor hand-winding. If it has stopped, a few turns of the crown will set it going again. The movement has been serviced and is guaranteed for one year.

Can the bracelet be adjusted?
Yes. The original integrated bracelet closes at approximately 15.5 cm wrist circumference and can be adjusted via its screwed links — each link can be removed by unscrewing its two visible screws, a straightforward operation for a watchmaker. Its integrated construction extends the case along its axis, and the signed Buckle clasp Cartier secures the whole.

Has the watch been polished?
Yes, in the past, before our acquisition. The surfaces are even and the edges of the octagonal case remain well defined; the fine visible scratches are those of normal wear since that polishing. We describe each watch exactly as it is, and our photographs show its precise condition.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 24 mm wide, 31 mm Lug-to-lug and 8.8 mm thick, it suits wrists up to approximately 15.5 cm in its current configuration — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its adjustable integrated bracelet follows the wrist in one continuous line, and its compact size slips easily under any cuff.
