The Santos in its octagonal form, with its original gadroon bracelet

This Cartier watch is what collectors call the Santos Godron, named after the fluted links of its bracelet. It belongs to the Santos family in a less common form than the carrée: an octagonal steel case, whose eight-sided bezel is secured by eight visible screws. The design retains the signature features of the Santos — the screws, the Roman numerals, the sword hands — while replacing the right angle with an eight-sided geometry that softens the silhouette on the wrist.

The integrated bracelet is the original one. Its solid links alternate with central gadroon links, fluted with three machined grooves, which catch the light with every movement of the wrist. Unlike the bracelet of the Santos carrée, it bears no screws: the continuity between the case and the bracelet is achieved through geometry alone.

The white dial features black Roman numerals, a railway minute track, and the Cartier signature at 12 o’clock. The blued steel sword hands and central seconds hand provide the only colour, along with the blue cabochon topping the crown. Beneath the caseback lies a self-winding mechanical movement — an uncommon configuration for a 24mm watch from this period, when quartz dominated.

The octagonal Santos was introduced by Cartier in the early 1980s, a few years after the relaunch of the Santos in steel and gold, and reference 0906 remained in the catalogue until the early 2000s. It never achieved the reach of the Santos carrée, which has never ceased to be produced, and it has not been reissued since: today, it is the variant sought after by those who know the carrée and want a less commonly seen design.

Three points to note

  • Case octagonal with eight screws — the least widely distributed variant of the Santos, never reissued since its removal from the catalogue.
  • Original gadroon bracelet — fluted central links, without screws, integrated into the case.
  • Automatic movement — rare in this feminine format at the time, serviced and guaranteed for one year.

Why choose a vintage Cartier?

Buying a vintage Cartier watch rather than a current production model gives access to designs the maison no longer manufactures. The octagonal Santos is a perfect example: its shape has never been reissued, and its gadroon bracelet exists on no contemporary Santos.

This watch is intended first and foremost for those seeking a Cartier women's watch with character: 24mm case, 31mm Lug-to-lug, 8.1mm thick. A format that can be worn daily and slips effortlessly under a cuff.

Like all our luxury vintage watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our watchmakers: movement check, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every pre-owned Cartier watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime authenticity guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Santos octagonal and the Santos carrée?
Both share the screwed bezel, Roman numerals and sword hands. The Santos octagonal replaces the square case with an eight-sided shape, secured by eight screws instead of four, one on each side, and its godron bracelet is not screwed. Introduced in the early 1980s, it was produced until the early 2000s without ever reaching the distribution of the carrée, and has not been reissued since. It is therefore significantly less common.

Why is it called the Santos Godron?
The godron is a raised moulding, here three parallel grooves machined into the central links of the bracelet. It is this bracelet, specific to the octagonal version of the Santos, that gave the model its customary name. The godron links alternate with solid brushed links, and the whole is integrated into the case without interruption. This is the original bracelet.

Can the bracelet be lengthened?
In its current configuration, it fits a wrist circumference of up to 15.5cm. Additional links can be ordered to lengthen it; let us know your wrist size before payment and we will specify the lead time and cost.

An automatic movement in a 24mm watch?
Yes, and that is what sets this reference apart. In the 1980s and 1990s, the majority of Cartier in this format were quartz. This one houses a compact mechanical movement that winds with the motion of the wrist; when worn daily, it does not need to be wound by hand. The movement has been serviced and is guaranteed for one year.

What wrist size is this watch suited to?
With a 24mm case and 31mm Lug-to-lug, it is a compact format, ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where the octagonal case retains all its presence and slips easily under a cuff with its 8.1mm thickness. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on personal taste and the look sought, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The measurement is only a guide, never a rule.
