Atelier Note

The Panthère that traded its square for a circle — gold and steel woven into two supple rows, the Cartier design of the 1990s in its most understated version.

A two-tone Cougar, the round Panthère by Cartier

This Cartier watch is a Panthère Cougar, reference 187904, produced in the 1990s. Alongside the Panthère carrée, which became one of the house's emblematic faces, the Cougar is its round variation — less well known, produced for a shorter time, and sought after precisely for that reason by collectors of Cartier.

Its two-tone finish pairs the steel of the case with the 18k yellow gold of the bezel, in the assertive language of the 1990s. The cream dial bears all the house codes: black Roman numerals, central minute track, blued steel sword hands, a date window — and the crown set with a blue spinel, the stone that Cartier reserved for these lines.

The original integrated bracelet is the true signature of the piece: its articulated links alternate steel and two rows of gold, with the suppleness of a curb chain flowing over the wrist — a jeweller's work more than a watchmaker's. It closes at 15.5cm; additional links can be added on request.

The movement is an ETA 956.412 quartz, fitted during the watch's lifetime — and the detail matters: the Cougar's original calibre, the Cartier 87, was itself an ETA ébauche from the 956 family, dressed in the house name, like all Cartier quartz movements of that era. The 956.412 is its current generation: same architecture, same functions, parts available everywhere. A replacement carried out to the highest standard, technically identical to the original. Checked and fitted with a new battery, it is guaranteed for one year.

Three points to note

01

The round Panthère — the Cougar, the most discreet and least common variation of the Panthère design.

02

Integrated gold and steel bracelet — two articulated rows of 18k gold within steel, with the suppleness of a jeweller's curb chain.

03

ETA 956.412 service quartz — the current generation from the same ETA family as the original Cartier calibre, guaranteed for one year.

Why choose a vintage Cartier Cougar?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches : its 33mm round case can be worn as a classic men's watch or as a women's watch with a strong presence, and its two-tone design has returned to the forefront of contemporary taste. The Cougar offers the design Panthère — integrated bracelet included — in a version not seen on every wrist.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement check, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every Cartier vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Cartier Cougar?
It is the round variation of the Panthère family, launched by Cartier in the late 1980s and produced throughout the 1990s. It reprises the design language of the line — articulated integrated bracelet, Roman numerals, blued hands, two-tone — in a round case that softens the silhouette. Produced for a shorter period than the Panthère carrée, it is today the version sought after by enthusiasts who want the style without the ubiquity.

Why is the movement not the original one?
It was replaced during servicing with an ETA 956.412 quartz movement — and this is where precision matters: the original Cougar calibre, the Cartier 87, was itself an ETA ébauche from the 956 family, decorated in the house's name, like all Cartier quartz movements of this generation. The 956.412 is the current version of this same family: identical architecture, identical functions, parts readily available everywhere and for years to come. The replacement is therefore technically transparent — case, dial, hands and bracelet are original Cartier, and we are stating this because you should know it before purchasing.

Is it possible to refit a Cartier movement?
Yes, in two ways. The first: finding a pre-owned Cartier 87 calibre — this is possible on the parts market, bearing in mind that a thirty-year-old quartz movement remains fragile and carries no guarantee of longevity. The second: going through Cartier service, which installs the current-generation movement bearing its name. In both cases, it will be the same ETA base movement — the only difference is the bridge engraving. That is precisely why the current replacement is technically transparent: the mechanics are identical, only the signature differs.

Can the bracelet be adjusted to my size?
In its current state, it closes on a 15.5cm wrist circumference. Additional links can be added to enlarge it — let us know your wrist size before purchase and we will confirm feasibility. Removing links for slimmer wrists is also possible, as with any articulated bracelet.

What does the crown bear?
A blue spinel — the stone that Cartier set into the crowns of its Must and Cougar lines, in reference to the sapphire of its high collections. It has been a house code for a century: the touch of blue on the side of the case, which here echoes the blued hands on the dial.

Is this piece suited to a slim or larger wrist?
With a 33mm diameter, 38mm Lug-to-lug, and 6.4mm thickness, it wears as a classic watch on a man and as a characterful watch on a woman — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The bracelet closes at 15.5cm and can be enlarged by adding links; its integrated construction holds the watch close to the wrist.
