A Vendôme in vermeil, with a black spider dial
This Cartier watch belongs to the Must of Cartier, the collection launched in the late 1970s to open the house to a new clientele: vermeil watches — sterling silver gold-plated — reviving the historic designs of Cartier. This one is a Vendôme, reference 590004, recognizable by its brancards: two gold stirrups that hold the strap in line with the round case, a direct legacy of the pocket watches that Cartier transformed into wristwatches at the beginning of the century.
The black dial combines two rarities. First, it is the most radical of Must designs: no markers, no numerals — only the must de Cartier signature, the interlaced double C and two gold sword hands on the bare lacquer. And it is a spider dial: its lacquer has crackled into a spiderweb pattern over the decades, a network of fine lines that appears only in raking light and that each example weaves along its own path. It is a patina born of time, on an authentic dial that has never been restored — the one sought after by collectors of Must.
The beaded crown bears its dark cabochon, the only relief in the profile. The vermeil case, so slim it slips beneath any cuff, extends the black of the dial through the gold of its brancards.
The movement is quartz, checked and fitted with a new battery. The watch is fitted with a later anthracite grey lizard-style leather strap with blue topstitching, with Buckle pin buckle.

What is a spider dial?
This is the name collectors give to lacquered dials whose varnish has cracked into a network of fine lines, like a spider's web. On the Must of Cartier from the 1980s and 1990s, the lacquers evolve in this way over the decades: each dial cracks along its own path, so that no example is identical to another. Far from being discarded, these dials are actively sought after — it is a patina born of time, on an authentic dial that has never been restored.
How is the time read without hour markers?
By the position of the hands alone — exactly as one reads a station clock from afar. The brain needs neither numerals nor markers to place two hands on a disc: after a few hours of wear, reading it is as immediate as on a classic dial. That is the premise of this design, and it has held true for forty years.
What is vermeil?
It is sterling silver covered with gold — a 925 silver case gold-plated, hallmarked on the caseback. Vermeil offers the weight and nobility of a solid precious metal, with the color of gold. It is the founding material of the Must of Cartier: it allowed the house to offer true precious-metal watches at a price that opened Cartier to an entire generation.
What is the Vendôme line?
At Cartier, Vendôme refers to the round brancard case: two stirrups that hold the strap in line with the watch, instead of conventional lugs. The design descends from the pocket watches the house converted into wristwatches at the beginning of the twentieth century, and its name pays tribute to Place Vendôme. On this Must version, the brancards frame a field of black lacquer.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or broad wrist?
