Atelier Note

A bare black lacquer, deep as on the first day — two gold hands, the original Cartier crocodile strap, and nothing but black since the 1990s.

An absolute-black Vendôme, complete with its original fitting

This Cartier watch belongs to the Must by Cartier, the collection launched at the end of the 1970s to open the house to a new clientele: vermeil watches — gold-plated sterling silver — reprising the historic designs of Cartier. This one is a Vendôme, reference 590004, recognizable by its brancards: two gold stirrups that hold the strap in line with the round case, a direct legacy of the pocket watches that Cartier transformed into wristwatches at the beginning of the century.

The black lacquered dial is the most radical of the Must designs: no markers, no numerals — only the must de Cartier signature, the interlaced double C, the word Swiss, and two gold sword hands crossing the black. Its lacquer has remained deep and crisp, with no cracking: the time is read against emptiness, and that is precisely the luxury of this design.

What sets this example apart: it has retained its original Cartier strap in black crocodile-pattern leather, mounted on the brancards by its gold screws, with its original Buckle buckle — the complete period ensemble, which is becoming rare on thirty-year-old watches whose leathers have almost always been replaced.

The beaded crown bears its dark cabochon, the only relief in the profile. The movement is quartz, checked and fitted with a new battery, guaranteed for one year.

Three points to note

01

Absolute black dial, crisp — bare lacquer without a single marker, still as deep as on the first day.

02

Original Buckle and Cartier strap — the period black croc, a rare survivor after thirty years.

03

Case Vendôme in vermeil — brancards with a pocket-watch spirit, in gold-plated sterling silver.

Why choose a vintage Must by Cartier?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a precise place among our vintage women's watches: its 24mm format makes it a true wrist jewel, and the Must by Cartier are the historic gateway into the house. A dial without markers never goes out of style — it never belonged to a trend in the first place — and an example complete with its original fitting adds what the market no longer provides.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every Cartier vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime-guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

How do you read the time without hour markers?
By the position of the hands alone — exactly as one reads a station clock from afar. The brain needs neither numbers nor markers to place two hands on a disc: after a few hours of wear, reading it becomes as immediate as on a classic dial. That is the wager of this design, and it has held true for forty years.

Is the original strap truly a real advantage?
Yes. On thirty-year-old watches, the original leather straps have almost always been replaced — finding the period Cartier strap with its Buckle, fitted on its gold screws, completes the ensemble exactly as it left the boutique. It bears the marks of its age, consistent with the watch; the 14mm Lug width allows a new leather strap to be fitted at any time while preserving the original.

What is vermeil?
It is sterling silver covered with gold — a 925 silver case gold-plated, hallmarked on the back. Vermeil offers the weight and nobility of a solid precious metal, with the color of gold. It is the foundational material of the Must by Cartier: it allowed the house to offer true precious-metal watches at a price that opened Cartier to an entire generation.

What is the Vendôme line?
At Cartier, Vendôme refers to the round case with bars: two stirrups that hold the strap in line with the watch, instead of traditional lugs. The design descends from the pocket watches that the house transformed into wristwatches at the beginning of the twentieth century, and its name pays tribute to Place Vendôme. On this Must version, the bars frame a field of black lacquer.

Is this piece suitable for a slender or larger wrist?
With a 24mm diameter, 30mm Lug-to-lug, and 5mm thickness, this is a jewelry-sized format intended for slender to medium wrists — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its bars hold the strap in line with the case, the watch sits as close as possible to the wrist, and its slimness lets it slip under any cuff.
