A Tank Solo Large, the 1917 design in a large format
This Cartier watch is a Tank Solo, reference 3169, in Large size — the contemporary interpretation of the design Louis Cartier created in 1917, inspired by Renault tanks seen from above: the vertical brancards that grip the strap, the rectangular dial, the geometry without ornament. Launched in 2004 as the entry point to the Tank family, the Solo was removed from the catalogue by Cartier, replaced by the Tank Must — which now makes it a discontinued reference.
The white dial displays the house’s full codes: black Roman numerals stretched into the corners, the central railway minute track, the secret signature slipped into the Roman numeral at seven o’clock, and blued steel sword hands. The beaded crown bears its blue synthetic spinel — the regulation touch of colour.
The Large format — 27mm wide by 35mm Lug-to-lug and 5.6mm thick — is the large model in the line: the full presence of a classic men’s watch, wearable by a woman in an oversized spirit. The steel case with satin-brushed brancards frames the dial without interruption.
The quartz movement has been checked and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a black crocodile-style leather strap, fastened by the original Cartier folding Buckle — the clasp that preserves the leather and keeps the watch open on the wrist.

What is the Cartier Tank?
It is the design Louis Cartier created in 1917, inspired by Renault tanks seen from above: a rectangle with vertical brancards, which became one of the most recognisable watches ever produced. Worn by a century of public figures, the Tank has never left the house's catalogue — only its variations have succeeded one another. The Solo was its entry-level version from 2004 until its discontinuation, replaced by the Tank Must.
Why is the Tank Solo no longer produced?
Cartier removed the Solo from its catalogue to replace it with the Tank Must, in a repositioning of its range. The consequence for the buyer is simple: the Solo now exists only on the secondary market, and the Large format, the most sought-after, is becoming scarcer. A discontinued reference of a century-old design is rarely a poor investment.
What does the Large size mean?
The Tank Solo existed in several sizes; the Large — 27mm wide by 35mm high — is the large model in the line. It is the format that gives the 1917 design its full presence: the Roman numerals stretch out, the brancards assert themselves, and the watch dresses a man's wrist like the historical Tank. A woman wears it in a very contemporary oversized register.
What does the deployant clasp add?
Two things. It preserves the leather: the strap remains fastened at all times, and is no longer bent each time it is taken off. And it secures the watch: when opened, the deployant clasp keeps the piece on the wrist instead of letting it slip away. It is the clasp of watches worn every day — this one is signed Cartier, original.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a width of 27mm, a height of 35mm, and a thickness of 5.6mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is the large format of the line: the Tank is read vertically on the wrist, and the Large fully embraces its presence. The lug width measures 20mm.
