Alba Lagoon Gold-Plated: the moonphase and lunar calendar watch by Seiko

This watch is signed Alba, the youthful and creative sub-brand of Seiko, within its Lagoon line. It is a piece of genuine horological whimsy, whose gilded dial is a small astronomical theatre. Unisex, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its round gold-plated case with resin back makes it remarkably light on the wrist. It measures 33mm (34mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 40.8mm and a thickness of 9.5mm.

The champagne gilded dial brings together several complications with playful legibility. At 12 o'clock, a moonphase moves across a starry sky in its aperture. At the center, a lunar calendar in an arc, graduated in odd days, allows you to follow the age of the moon with the help of a dedicated hand. A date aperture sits at 3 o'clock. Generous applied Arabic numerals and a scalloped bezel complete this richly detailed dial, signed LAGOON, ALBA and Lunar Calendar.

Inside beats a quartz movement Seiko, V335 caliber, with lunar complications. In practice, maintenance is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. This is a watch that favors the pleasure of display and the poetry of the lunar cycle over pure chronometric performance.

On the wrist, the piece displays an assumed vintage charm. The gilded dial, moonphase and lunar calendar form a warm and original ensemble, highlighted here by a natural leather strap in fawn, with keepers, original. This vintage strap has been weakened by time: we recommend planning for its replacement. The Lug width of 16mm leaves the choice of replacement straps open.

Three points to note

  • The watch combines a moonphase and a pointer-type lunar calendar: two rare poetic complications on a piece at this price.
  • The resin-backed case makes it very light on the wrist, a daily comfort advantage.
  • The original leather strap is old and weakened. It remains wearable, but we advise planning for its replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alba, the brand of this watch?
Alba is a sub-brand of Seiko, launched in the late 1970s, conceived as a younger, more colorful and creative line. It produced many fashion and decorative watches, often equipped with playful complications such as this moonphase. An Alba watch is the reliability of a Seiko movement beneath a relaxed and original aesthetic.

How does the lunar calendar work?
The lunar calendar, graduated in days at the center of the dial, indicates the age of the moon, that is, the number of days elapsed since the last new moon, using a dedicated hand. Coupled with the moonphase displayed at 12 o'clock, it allows you to follow the complete lunar cycle at a glance. It is a complication that is both poetic and educational.

Is the case made of solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a resin back, which makes the watch particularly light on the wrist. The plating brings the brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. It is a typical construction of Alba decorative watches, favoring comfort and originality.

Is this Alba water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the pressure of the case back is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, poses no difficulty.

Does a 33mm case suit which wrist?
With a diameter of 33mm and a Lug-to-lug of 40.8mm, it is a versatile size: ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where it appears perfectly proportioned. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the desired look, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The market value is only a benchmark, never a rule.
