Atelier Note

A ring of black lacquer around a white dial, sub-seconds turning at six o'clock — the Ronde in sterling silver, never polished, just as it has lived.

A Ronde in sterling silver, encircled with black lacquer

This Cartier watch belongs to the Must of Cartier, the collection created at the end of the 1970s to open the house to a new clientele, on one principle: watches in sterling silver — bare or gold-plated — reprising the historic designs of Cartier. This one is a Ronde, reference 1815, from the 2000s: a circular 33mm 925 silver case, left in the color of its white metal.

Its black lacquered bezel is what sets it apart at first glance: a ring of deep lacquer encircles the white dial, like a stroke of ink drawn around the hours — the graphic contrast that plain Ronde models do not have, and which makes this version the most boldly drawn in the line.

The white dial displays the house's full codes: black Roman numerals, railway minute track, signature must de Cartier, blued steel sword hands — and sub-seconds at six o'clock, that separate register inherited from pocket watches, rare on quartz Cartier watches. The crown bears its blue cabochon.

The quartz movement has been serviced and is guaranteed for one year. The case has never been polished: it bears its signs of wear, visible in our photographs — we prefer silver that has lived to silver that has been erased. The watch is fitted with its original Cartier strap in navy blue grained leather, secured by an original steel deployant clasp.

Three points to note

01

Black lacquered bezel — the ink-like ring encircling the white dial, the most graphic version of the Ronde.

02

Sub-seconds at six o'clock — the pocket watch register, rare on a quartz Cartier.

03

Sterling silver never polished — the 925 of the Must in its lived-in condition, with original strap and deployant clasp.

Why choose a vintage Must from Cartier?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 33mm case can be worn equally well by either, and the Must of Cartier remain the historic gateway to the house — a true precious metal, a true Cartier design, at a budget the current catalogue no longer knows. The black bezel and the sub-seconds make this a version one does not come across often.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every Cartier vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Must line from Cartier?
It is the collection launched by Cartier at the end of the 1970s to open the house to a new generation: watches in sterling silver — plain or gold-plated — taking up the house’s historic designs, at a price that democratized Cartier without lowering its material quality. The Ronde is its circular variation, here in silver left white beneath a black lacquer bezel.

What is a sub-seconds display?
It is a separate counter, here at six o’clock, where the seconds rotate on their own track instead of a central seconds hand — the architecture of pocket watches, from which wristwatches inherited it. On the quartz watches of Cartier, it is rare: it requires a dedicated calibre, and gives the dial a more horological register than the classic two- or three-hand layout.

Why has the case not been polished?
By choice. Polishing a silver case removes material along with the scratches: the edges become rounded, the sides hollow out, and the watch loses a little of its design each time. We prefer to offer silver that has lived, intact, leaving it to its future owner to decide — polishing is always possible, the reverse never is.

Will the silver darken?
925 silver may tarnish slightly over time, in contact with air — this is the metal’s normal behavior, reversible with a soft cloth. Avoid silver-care products and abrasives on lacquered areas. When worn regularly, a silver case tarnishes very little: everyday friction is enough to maintain it.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 33mm diameter, 35.7mm Lug-to-lug and 7mm thickness, it suits wrists from around 15 to 19cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its short lugs make it wear compactly, and its slimness lets it slip under a cuff. The Lug width measures 17mm, making it easy to change the strap.
