Jaeger-LeCoultre: The Watchmaker's Watchmaker

The history of Jaeger-LeCoultre begins in 1833 in Le Sentier. Thanks to inventions such as the millionometer (1844) and the crown-winding system (1847), Antoine LeCoultre positioned his manufacture as the technical center of the Vallée de Joux. Nicknamed "the watchmaker of watchmakers," the house equipped the greatest names of the "Holy Trinity" (Patek, AP, Vacheron) before merging with Jaeger in 1937.

The Pillars of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Vintage Collection

Reverso: The Pivoting Icon

  • Origin: Created in 1931 to protect the Crystal of polo players' watches.
  • Design: A pure Art Deco style with its horizontal gadroons and rectangular format.
  • Verso: A unique surface of expression for engraving, enamel, or a second complication (Duoface).

Memovox: The Voice of Time

Launched in 1950, the Memovox is the global benchmark for the alarm watch. Its crystalline chime and wrist vibration make it one of the most useful complications in vintage watchmaking.

Innovations: Futurematic and Polaris

  • Futurematic: A revolutionary automatic watch without a visible winding crown.
  • Polaris: A historic diving watch (1968) incorporating an underwater alarm to remind the diver to surface.

Calibres: Handcrafted Excellence

JLC is one of the rare manufactures to produce all of its movements in-house, including hairsprings and escapements. Shaped calibres (rectangular for the Reverso) and ultra-thin calibres are the house's signature.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches

Why is JLC nicknamed "the watchmaker of watchmakers"?

Because it historically designed and supplied ultra-complex movements to the greatest houses, which at the time did not possess this capacity for in-house innovation.

Is the Reverso water-resistant?

On vintage models, water resistance is very limited due to the complexity of the swivelling case. We advise against any contact with water in order to preserve the manufacture calibre.

How can an old Jaeger-LeCoultre be dated?

Thanks to the serial numbers engraved on the movement and the case, we can consult the manufacture archives to confirm the exact year of production and the original calibre.
