Men's Natural Stone Bracelets: Stone on the Wrist

A natural stone bracelet for men is judged on three things: the stone itself, the setting that holds it, and the way the whole piece wears day after day. At Atelier Victor, the stones are selected by hand in Sri Lanka, then set in 925 sterling silver or in 18-carat gold depending on the model.

These bracelets are designed to be worn on their own, stacked, or on the wrist opposite a vintage watch. It is the same principle as in watchmaking: a material that ages well, craftsmanship by atelier, and an object meant to be kept.

The Stones We Set

The Four Precious Stones

Gemology recognizes only four precious stones: diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. The first three are hard enough to make them suitable for daily wear.

• Sapphire — Corundum, hardness 9 on the Mohs scale. It is the stone most present in our tennis bracelets, from light blue to deep blue. Its hardness makes it the safest colored gemstone to wear every day.
• Emerald — Beryl, hardness 7.5 to 8. Softer than sapphire and crossed with gardens, those natural inclusions that mark its origin. It requires a little more care against impacts.
• Diamond — Hardness 10, the maximum on the scale. Set alone or alternating with sapphires on gold tennis bracelets.
• Ruby — Also corundum, hardness 9, the same family as sapphire from which it differs only by color.

Baltic Amber

Amber is not a mineral but a fossilized resin, formed several tens of millions of years ago. Baltic amber is the most sought-after for the depth of its color and the quality of its polish. Its hardness is low — 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale — which makes it a soft stone, warm to the touch and very light to wear.

Our amber bracelets are available in thin plaques, wide plaques, squares and round beads, in cognac, honey, dark orange, green and black-red shades. As each element is natural, no two bracelets are ever identical.

Semi-Precious Stones and Synthetic Stones

Beyond the four precious stones, atelier works with fine stones — tourmaline, peridot, lapis lazuli, onyx, tiger's eye, quartz. Some models are also set with zirconium, a synthetic stone: in this case, the piece listing mentions it explicitly. When a stone is not accompanied by a certificate, we state this rather than asserting otherwise.

Sterling Silver 925 or 18-Carat Gold: Choosing the Setting

• 925 sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver. The most common setting in our collection. It develops a patina with wear, which darkens the recesses of the setting and brings out the stone. Cleaning it with a cloth restores its brightness whenever desired.
• 18-carat yellow gold — 75% pure gold, hallmarked 750. It does not tarnish or oxidize. This is the setting that best enhances an emerald or a diamond.
• White gold — Available in 18 and 14 carats. The 14-carat, with a higher content of alloy metals, is harder and more scratch-resistant; the 18-carat is richer in gold.

The choice is made above all for consistency with what one already wears: a wedding band, a signet ring, or a watch case. Mixing metals is common practice, but the harmony is more noticeable on a wrist than on a hand.

Shapes: Tennis, Link, Plates

• The tennis bracelet — A continuous line of set stones, each held by four prongs or a bezel setting. It is the most formal shape. Our models — Isarn, Valérian, Marcel, Osmond, Aymon, Hervelin, Octavien — are available in small and medium sizes.
• The stone-set link — A chain of links punctuated with stones, more discreet than a full tennis bracelet. A good first stone bracelet for those unaccustomed to wearing one.
• Plates and beads — Specific to amber, they leave the raw material visible: cut and polished plates, or threaded round beads. The most relaxed shape in the collection.

Wearing and Caring for a Stone Bracelet

• Remove the bracelet before sports, DIY, and the pool. Chlorine attacks alloys, and an impact on an emerald or on amber leaves a permanent mark.
• Clean with lukewarm water using a very soft brush, then dry. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on emerald and amber.
• Store separately: a diamond scratches everything else, including a sapphire.
• On a tennis bracelet worn daily, have the prongs checked once a year. This is the only real maintenance point of this type of piece.

Which stone should you choose for daily wear?

Sapphire, without hesitation: with a hardness of 9 out of 10, it withstands contact with everyday surfaces. Emerald and amber are softer and are better suited to occasional or dress wear.

How can you tell if a stone is natural?

A natural stone almost always shows inclusions visible under a loupe — the jardin of an emerald, the veils of a sapphire. A perfectly pure stone of large size at a modest price is most often synthetic. In our product descriptions, a synthetic stone is identified as such, and a stone without a certificate is indicated as requiring confirmation.

What bracelet size should I order?

Measure your wrist with a tailor's tape measure, at the wrist bone, then add one centimetre for a supple drape. If in doubt, send us the measurement: we adjust the length before shipping.

Does 925 silver tarnish?

It develops a patina, which has nothing to do with the quality of the alloy: it is a natural reaction of silver to air and skin. Many wearers seek it out, as it deepens the relief. A silver polishing cloth removes it in just a few strokes.
